Everton, if they are to progress as a football club, need to consolidate rather than push for mass change.
After all, it has been their inability to keep ahold of their prized assets across Farhad Moshiri’s era that has hamstrung them more than anything, then forcing the huge sums they have received into the wrong hands.
Now, they are under the watchful and vengeful eye of PSR, with the last Premier League season a stark warning to the Toffees and all other teams in the division.
Two points deductions stopped Sean Dyche’s side from finishing comfortably mid-table, but in the coming campaign, their final one with Goodison Park as their home, the former Burnley boss will have ambitions of repeating that feat.
Fabrizio Romano provides Jack Harrison loan update
He and Kevin Thelwell are clearly going about their recruitment in the right way, if they are to realise that goal, given their defiance in the face of hefty Manchester United interest in Jarrad Branthwaite.
They are standing firm on their star man, and now Fabrizio Romano is detailing who they might sign to further consolidate their position of strength.

Taking to X, the transfer journalist writes: ‘Everton are close to signing Jack Harrison on loan deal from Leeds United, as @nancyfroston reports.
‘His return is concrete possibility, waiting to clarify some details in order to make it happen soon.’
Jack Harrison played 29 league games for the Toffees last season, with the £90k-a-week speedster a mainstay on the flank alongside Dwight McNeil.
He will likely join up with Tim Iroegbunam, who Romano also claims has agreed a deal to join the club.
Everton are keeping the spine of their team together
With this latest piece of transfer news, partnered with their stance on Branthwaite, it does seem like this summer could actually be one where they keep ahold of the spine of their team, rather than allow it to be gutted for quick money.
After all, a bag of money alone cannot replace a quick, powerful, left-footed central defender, and Everton’s recruitment over the years does not have the fans confident in their ability to find an ample replacement.

Amadou Onana could still leave, but given Everton are after Tim Iroegbunam, already measures are in place to offset that particular departure.
For once, this club is acting with forethought and intelligence, preparing for the worst, but planning to achieve the best.
It is so refreshing to see, and could result in a hugely impressive final campaign at Goodison Park, buoyed by a home crowd that will be in fine voice all year round.
