Today is both D-Day and Groundhog Day for Everton, who once again can expect to learn the outcome of another PSR ruling.
The first saw them administered the harshest points deduction in top-flight history, and whilst it was later reduced to six points, it remains a sore spot for many Evertonians.
Especially given Nottingham Forest, who supposedly broke the rules to a larger extent, were only given four points in their subsequent case.
A new precedent is seemingly set with each trial, and the subjective nature of this procedure means it is impossible to predict the outcome.
However, one man has at least sought to predict the time frame for the release of such vital information.
Everton learn potential deduction time
Taking to X, finance expert and former financial advisor for Manchester City, Stefan Borson, offered his view on today’s proceedings.
It is largely expected that a result will soon emerge detailing the extent of the Premier League and independent commission’s punishment for Everton, who were found guilty for a second time this season of breaching PSR.
Little has been heard since, and now some kind of time scale has been assumed by the man who has recently made plenty of appearances on talkSPORT to debate football finances with Jim White and Simon Jordan.
Borson wrote, just last night: ‘Everton’s second IC decision is due to be released tomorrow. Club and PL find out in the morning and public release around lunchtime if Forest timings are followed.’
Sean Dyche will be praying for a positive solution
Whilst it may seem obvious that the manager of Everton would not want another points deduction, for him a positive outcome could be one of many things.
After all, following his side’s laboured win on Saturday over a poor Burnley side, they effectively turned the relegation battle into a five-horse race, dragging Crystal Palace and Brentford into the equation.
These sides are all competing to avoid that one final spot, assuming that the Clarets and Sheffield United are as good as gone.
So, with five points separating 18th-placed Luton Town and 14th-placed Crystal Palace, and the Toffees just one point behind the latter, they are in a position of veritable strength at the moment.
However, anything more than a one or two-point deduction would turn that around completely, and once again plunge them back into turmoil.
A positive outcome is one which ends this PSR saga for good and still leaves Sean Dyche with survival in his hands. After all, with their favourable fixtures all against those around them, keeping their head above water even before entering this run could be paramount.
