Everton have had their fair share of criticism so far this season under Sean Dyche, but one manager is having an even worse time of things
Sean Dyche was appointed as Everton boss in January of 2023.
The Toffees escaped the drop by two points in Dyche’s first season in charge and went on to increase the points tally by two and finished in 15th the following season.
There have been rumours of David Moyes being lined up ahead of a potential switch from The Friedkin Group once the takeover is complete, but nothing is certain.
However, Dyche has proven he has what it takes to keep Everton afloat in seasons gone by, but under new owners they may want to aim higher.
Regardless, if some Everton fans think Dyche is bad, they can breathe a sigh of relief that one football icon rejected the chance to be interviewed for the job in January of 2022.
Football icon turns down an Everton interview in 2022
Farhad Moshiri was on the search for a new Everton boss after Rafa Benitez’s departure in 2022, and he stumbled across a number of candidates.
Vitor Pereira and Duncan Ferguson were in the running.
However, it was Moshiri who approached someone different for an interview for the Everton job in 2022. A name that all Toffees fans will be very familiar with.

Interestingly, Wayne Rooney spoke out in the Guardian about how his agent was approached to ask for an interview for the Everton manager job.
“Everton approached my agent and asked me to interview for the vacant job, which I turned down,” Rooney said. “I believe I will be a Premier League manager – I believe I’m ready for that, 100%. And if that is with Everton one day in the future that would be absolutely great. But I’ve got a job here that I’m doing at Derby County which is an important job to me.”
Wayne Rooney’s torrid managerial career so far
Wayne Rooney burst onto the scene as a teenager at the age of 16 for Everton, and the rest is history. He scored a whopping 313 goals and provided 164 assists in his 764-game career.
However, his managerial career hasn’t quite gone to plan.
The Englishman kicked off his managerial career at Derby County, where he managed them 11 times as caretaker boss and 73 times as the head coach.
During that time, he achieved a points per game of 1.18 and 1.14, respectively.
It went downhill from there as his 53-game stint at DC United saw his points per game drop to 1.04, followed by his awful time as Birmingham City boss with 0.67 points per game.
He’s now at Plymouth Argyle with his best record of 1.27 points per game, which is tied with Sean Dyche’s current reign at Everton, which has been viewed as underwhelming for some fans.
Given the strong squads, Rooney had at Derby County, and the impressive position Birmingham was in prior to the former Toffee taking over, it’s clear that he didn’t have the experience to take the job.
Plus, the demands of the Premier League are on a whole different level, and require the tactical knowhow to navigate certain opposition, which Rooney hasn’t displayed at all.
