Frank Lampard endured an indifferent one-year reign at Everton.

Frank Lampard joined in January 2022 with the sole aim of saving Everton from relegation after Rafael Benitez’s dire start to the season.

The Chelsea legend achieved that objective and ended up finishing four points clear of 18th-placed Burnley.

However, it all unravelled the following year as he just couldn’t kick on up the table and was replaced by Sean Dyche in January 2023.

Lampard would argue he was restricted by finances as the squad was in desperate need of more quality, and that’s only amplified by the fact his ‘best player’ is now on the verge of joining a Championship club.

Former Everton winger Demarai Gray set to join Birmingham City in the Championship

Demarai Gray was considered Lampard’s ‘best player’ during his two years on Merseyside.

Demarai Gray enjoyed a really productive debut season, registering 11 goal involvements across all competitions, including a wondergoal against Arsenal.

However, when Dyche came in, it became pretty evident the former Leicester City wide player wasn’t fancied, so he moved to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq.

The 28-year-old has struggled in Saudi Arabia, netting just four goals in 50 appearances, and is now set to return to England.

According to GiveMeSport, Birmingham City are on the verge of landing Gray’s signature with an ‘announcement imminent’.

Gray could be one to watch next season

Despite his struggles in Saudi, Gray is still a Premier League quality player, so with the motivating factor of returning to his boyhood club, he could rip it up in the second tier.

The West Midlanders have ambitions of gaining back-to-back promotions under billionaire owner Tom Wagner, who is supported by NFL legend Tom Brady.

Gray could well find himself back in the top-flight in a year’s time, so it seems like a really good move for him.

The 24-cap Jamaica international could form a front three with Jay Stansfield and La Liga winger Carlos Vicente, who is keen on making a switch to England.
