Jarrad Branthwaite was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the first time on Thursday afternoon.
The Everton defender has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last year, having previously represented England at under-21s level. The 21-year-old has been selected alongside fellow central defenders Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Ezri Konsa, Harry Maguire and John Stones.
The England boss has since explained why he selected Branthwaite, citing the defender as a rare breed.
Gareth Southgate: Everton defender has rare trait
Speaking to the media after announcing his squad, the England boss said: “We watched him as a backup central defender in the under-21s final last year, and if you told me that he would play as consistently well at Premier League level as he has, then I would have questioned that.
“Great credit to him and Sean [Dyche] for giving a young centre halve an opportunity. He’s good with the ball. He shows good composure and mentality, and he’s a left-footer; we don’t have many left-footed defenders.
“He’s in on merit. We’re really keen to work with him and find out a bit more about him.”
Can Brathwaite stake a EURO 2024 claim?
When looking at Southgate’s options more closely, Branthwaite could have an opportunity to stake a claim for this summer’s European Championships.
John Stones’ position at the heart of England’s defence is non-negotiable. The Manchester City star is arguably one of the Three Lions’ best technical players and is essential for the way Southgate wishes to operate.

However, beyond Stones, there are hardly any clear-cut candidates that could partner the 29-year-old.
Of course, the England boss adores Harry Maguire, but his form for Manchester United has been questionable. Lewis Dunk is another; however, it’s hard to envisage him starting in the Euros. Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa could be Branthwaite’s main competition.
If he performs anywhere near the level he’s been setting for Everton, the 21-year-old will undoubtedly give the England hierarchy a decision to make come the end of the season.
