Tim Ream says James Tarkowski didn’t do ‘a whole lot wrong’ as Everton’s opener against Fulham was disallowed at the weekend.

Speaking on The American Dream podcast, the defender leaped to Tarkowski’s defence after Michael Keane’s goal was chalked off for a foul on the goalkeeper.

Everton opened the 2023-34 campaign with a home clash against Fulham and looked to have taken the lead if not for a controversial decision. A ball floated into the box was at first handled by Bernd Leno, before the German dropped it after Tarkowski backed into him.

While it looked like Leno may have had both hands on the ball at the time, there was plenty of criticism targeted at the decision due to the fact that Tarkowski was looking the opposite way to his opponent.

A foul seemed like a rather harsh decision at Goodison Park and it appears Ream agrees with the frustrated Everton fans.

“I think in Tarks’ defence, he almost does similar to what I’m doing in that situation,” Ream said.

“You can challenge of course, but you know you’re not going to be the one to come out on top in that because the keeper should come out on top in that everytime.

“I think seeing it, he didn’t do a whole lot wrong.

“The only thing I would say – could it have been because Leno did have the ball in his hands and did they determine that as he came down he had two hands on the ball and as he came down it’s been knocked out of his hands? I don’t know. But genuinely I haven’t seen it.”

Everton failed to take any further chances on home turf and were instead punished when Bobby De Cordova-Reid opened the scoring halfway through the second half, gifting the three points to the visitors.

Despite claiming over double the amount of shots that Fulham had, the Toffees failed to score their first goal of the season and will instead turn to their meeting with Aston Villa on Sunday.
