Everton were left to rue missed chances as West Ham United ran out 3-1 winners at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Stoppage time goals from Tomas Soucek and Edson Alverez saw David Moyes’ side return south with a snath and grab victory.
Everton had started the brighter and had the opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot. However, Beto saw his low penalty saved by Alphonse Areola.
The Portuguese striker wasn’t to be denied and headed the Toffees in front midway through the second half after a brilliant cross by James Garner.
The Hammers levelled through a Kurt Zouma header before knicking two late goals. The defeat leaves Everton 16th in the Premier League table.
Sean Dyche rues Everton missed chances
Yet again, it was missed chances costing the home side. According to BBC Sport’s statistics, the Toffees managed 11 efforts on target, over double that of their opponents.
In his latest press conference, Sean Dyche couldn’t quite believe what he witnessed.
“We’re creating that many chances we have to take them. It’s our responsibility because it’s getting to the point where you can’t believe what you’re seeing,” he said (via BBC Sport).

“It’s an otherwise very good performance but you have to have conviction in front of goal.
“Penalty has to go in, at least we got a penalty which is a positive. It’s not a blow it’s a reality. Too many games have got away from us at Goodison.
“We create golden chances, we don’t take them, and they had two more chances and scored them both. I’m frustrated because we’re doing good stuff – but you have to score a goal. The pressure is on us now to score goals.”
Running theme emerging
This feels like a running theme emerging for Everton.
Too often this side fail to create chances or aren’t clinical enough in front of goal; the latter was certainly the case today.
Beto needs to be more clinical. Yes, he scored after the penalty miss, but a first-half lead would have given the home team further impetus.
It’s hard to see where Everton go from here with a tough-looking test against Manchester United next up.
At the moment, those extra points from the Premier League are looking even more important.
