‘He’s unwilling to..’: Presenter highlights issue Dyche now faces with ‘reckless’ Everton player

Everton’s recruitment strategies have been very questionable in the last few years, and constantly changing managers has meant that the squad does not fully suit a specific style of play.

Sean Dyche was appointed last February, and Everton have had different managers in each season dating back to 2018. Ronald Koeman, Marco Silva, Sam Allardyce, Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard have all been hired and fired, whilst trying to implement different styles of play.

This has meant that there are some players in the squad who are simply unsuited to Dyche’s tough-tackling style, and midfielder Andre Gomes, who is currently injured, is a prime example of this.

Gomes does not suit Dyche’s style

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Ben Winstanley, who presents Everton podcast A View From The Bullens, has highlighted a problem Everton have: Gomes does not fit Dyche’s style, but he may be needed anyway because of a lack of depth.

“In regards to Gomes, he’s probably the least Dyche player I’ve ever seen,” he stated.

“He’s unwilling to put the hard graft in, doesn’t really make many tackles. He’s a very technically possession-based footballer and Everton this season aren’t going to have a lot of possession.

“They’re just not. Now, he is a body, he can play there, and if we are ultimately losing games, when teams go back and they drop 10, 15 feet backwards, you might be able to throw the likes of Gomes on.

“He might be able to be the one that unlocks that midfield, but as I touched on earlier, Everton are so short in the midfield that we’re going to need bodies.

“We’re going to need every single man. I don’t expect Gomes to start week in week out.”

Although Gomes was an excellent player years ago, often shining during his time at Valencia, Barcelona and his early days at Everton, his lack of fitness and form already presented a problem for him.

He has previously been described as “reckless,” and given that he is a technical attacking midfielder, whose strengths are in his passing ability in possession, playing in a Dyche midfield may prove too intense a task for him.

It sums up Everton’s lack of long-term strategy that a signing like Gomes would end up being a squad option under a manager like Dyche, and it will be hoped that the club do not find themselves in a situation where Dyche is forced to use a player unsuited to his tactics like Gomes.
