How sources inside Everton feel about the prospect of suffering another points deduction this season

Everton’s financial issues have been well-documented for half a decade now, with their steady regression the result of years of misconduct.

The blame for this failure must lay at Farhad Moshiri’s door given he is the one who appoints those who made the errors, but there are so many people who have had a hand in this disaster.

Fortunately, Kevin Thelwell is making great strides towards turning the tide, with Sean Dyche doing all he can to fix things on the pitch too.

And yet, for all their hard work, more turmoil could be just around the corner.

Everton could be handed another points deduction

With fears emerging that Everton could suffer another points deduction, fans have understandably been reacting with frustration.

After all, the campaign they had just endured was completely ravaged by the Premier League’s PSR, but they thought that the worst of it was surely over.

Seeking to calm supporters and offer assurances, the Liverpool ECHO provided the following insightful update: Everton remain confident the club will be able to defend itself in an outstanding financial debate with the Premier League – if it does eventually take place. Reports claiming the Blues could be hit with a new points deduction emerged on the eve of the new campaign – one club chiefs hope will see progress continue after a season that saw Sean Dyche’s side pull clear of a relegation fight with weeks to spare.

‘A busy summer in the transfer market followed and after a positive final week of pre-season friendlies there is hope the club can provide a good year on the pitch to mark the final year at Goodison Park.

‘Four months on, no resolution has been reached. Should a new hearing take place and if the Blues were to lose it, it could lead to a revision of the club’s PSR position across the financial years that ended in 2021, 2022 and 2023 – and potentially by a larger sum than that initial £6.5m.

‘Such an outcome could therefore, in theory, lead to an additional deduction that would be imposed this season. That prospect remains distant at this stage and the club remains confident it can defend its position, however.’

PSR continues to prove itself unfit for purpose

With this latest revelation, it is laughable just how unfit for purpose PSR continues to prove itself. Yet, it somehow remains the overriding and outstanding benchmark for financial punishments.

That is, despite the statutes being wildly out of date, not taking the inflation of money in football into consideration, and actually prohibiting progression of any kind.

The Premier League don’t want a fairytale story, because they would serve to make far more money when Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and the rest of them are all up there fighting for those coveted European spots.

Just the mere fact that both Aston Villa and Newcastle United have had to sell big players in recent years just to comply, despite both having sensationally qualified for the Champions League, is ridiculous.

And now, this latest gaffe actually proves its inadequacy on another scale, given the Toffees would be punished because their own commission failed to carry out a proper investigation.

Fortunately, Everton remain confident on the matter, but they did so last season and suffered two points deductions. Nobody can predict how PSR might act.
