How Thelwell and Dyche could get 777 Partners boost to Everton transfer plans

Everton are a club that has lost its way in recent years, but finally seem destined to enjoy a period of stability under Sean Dyche.

The manager, appointed back in January to save them from the drop, has already enjoyed great strides forward with a team only slightly altered due to their immense financial constraints.

There is hope that this will not prove to be another false dawn, as experienced under Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard, but instead a return to solidity and safety in abundance.

In order to navigate their numerous tribulations, Kevin Thelwell has had to tread lightly to give Dyche the best possible chance of success. His deals in the transfer market have been shrewd and incisive, whilst cutting down the wage bill marks a particular standout for the 50-year-old.

However, he could at last be set to enjoy a minor boost, should 777 Partners see their takeover go through before Christmas.

With his January plans likely already in order, the Miami-based firm could provide a key cash injection at an ample time to ensure the playing squad is improved accordingly, alongside other assets.

That is, if the Liverpool ECHO’s suggestion comes true, with journalist Chris Beesley penning an article on the two things that could help. First referencing Mladen Sormaz, the 777 Partners’ director of football analytics, it is suggested he could enjoy a profitable relationship with Thelwell.

They write: ‘The conversation often gravitates back to Brazil with Sormaz and it’s perhaps no coincidence given that he believes that South America is market that offers great potential for big European clubs and that Brazilians in particular are among the best-suited imports when it comes to hitting the ground running in the Premier League due to the combination of their skill-set and mentality when it comes to playing in front of large, passionate crowds who have significant expectation levels.’

He then notes how useful it could be, ‘being able to access the shared resources and knowledge of their football analytics departments’.

How has Kevin Thelwell done so far at Everton?

There are numerous benefits that their Director of Football has implemented since his 2022 appointment, with most of them circling around their finances.

Given the FFP crisis they are suffering, which could still result in a 12-point deduction, it was imperative for Thelwell to cut down on their exorbitant wage bill.

It is worth noting that, since the 2021/22 season when he joined, the £110m per year they used to spend on salaries has since dropped to a far more affordable £78m per year.

This came from generating huge sales of star men, and yet the £60m gained for Richarlison, and £45m for Anthony Gordon, are currently looking like fine pieces of business.

On top of that, with the latter included, the sales of academy graduates marked pure profit for the Toffees during their hour of need, with Ellis Simms and Tom Cannon the sacrifices.

Having amassed those funds, most of which Everton remained reluctant to spend, he then scoured the market for cheap deals, bringing in the likes of James Tarkowski. Dwight McNeil and James Garner for minimal fees.

His work under the huge restrictions endured has been nothing short of miraculous.
