Everton will be hoping to build on their growing momentum when they take on Newcastle United on Saturday.
Dwight McNeil’s stunning brace ensured Everton picked up their first win of the 2024/25 season last weekend and a draw with Leicester City the week prior has lifted spirits around Goodison Park.
Sean Dyche’s side have actually played well for most of the campaign but disastrous defeats to Bournemouth and Aston Villa sapped any budding confidence.
But now they have finally got three points on the board, Everton will be aiming to keep the ball rolling when they welcome Newcastle United to Merseyside.
The Magpies represent much tougher opposition, though, and here’s everything you need to know about the game.

Everton vs Newcastle United team news
Everton will continue to be without their four long-term absentees with Armando Broja, Seamus Coleman, Natan Patterson and Youssef Chermiti remaining sidelined.
Dyche said in his pre-match press conference: “They’re a bit longer them two [Chermiti and Broja].
“Coleman is a bit longer as well. Not too much longer, we’re a bit hopeful over this international period he gets closer.
“Patto is more common sense now. He’s out training all the time, he needs a game programme after being out just around that six-month mark. A bit of a longer-term one but he’s making good progress, he’s training regularly. So far so good.”
However, there is some more bad news as Jarrad Branthwaite is now a big doubt after straining his quad in training.
Newcastle have been hit even harder with injuries and are without Sven Botman, Lewis Miley, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Targett, Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.
Eddie Howe is confident Kieran Trippier can play but the full-back is a doubt.
Referee and officials
Craig Pawson will be the man in the middle for Saturday’s game. The full team of officials is:
- Referee: Craig Pawson
- Assistants: Marc Perry, Mark Scholes
- Fourth official: Tim Robinson
- VAR: Chris Kavanagh

Prediction
Newcastle may have only lost their first game of the season last weekend but the comprehensive 3-1 beating at the hands of Fulham was coming.
An injury-hit Magpies haven’t been at their relentless best so far this season, despite holding Manchester City to a draw, with key players not performing and their press not quite clicking.
They’ll of course be hard opposition for Everton but, if the Blues get at them early there’s a strong chance a result could be had.
Prediction: Everton 1-1 Newcastle.
