Any Everton fans watching Switzerland vs Colombia at the World Cup last night will have seen popular former defender Yerry Mina enter the fray for the South American nation.

The game was not one to be remembered, with Switzerland eventually winning on penalties after there was no breakthrough after 120 minutes.

It was undoubtedly one of the more forgettable contests at the tournament so far.

But for Everton fans it was nice to not only see James Rodriguez once again, but also Yerry Mina, who came on for the final minutes of extra time.

That was his first appearance at the tournament, and his sighting sparked a bit of talk between Everton fans about the defender, who spent a few years on Merseyside.

But how has Mina done since leaving Everton?

After making 99 appearances for Everton across five seasons at Goodison Park, Mina left the club to join Fiorentina in 2023.

Mina had reached the end of his contract at Everton, so he left on a free transfer.

Having struggled a lot with injuries during his time at Goodison, Mina would have wanted to really kick on in Italy.

Sadly though, his injury problems persisted.

He picked one up while on international duty with Colombia, with the club informing fans that it was a ‘tear in his thigh’.

Mina would actually leave Fiorentina after just half a season, after it became clear he was not in the plans of Vincenzo Italiano. He made just seven appearances for the club.

He then made a domestic move to Cagliari, and fortunately for Mina that has been a much more successful move.

To date, he’s made 72 appearances for the club and has been able to largely steer clear of injuries. He’s also chipped in with five goals, which comes as no real surprise given he’s always been an attacking threat.

His efforts have helped Cagliari remain in the Italian top-flight, finishing 14th last season, 16th in 2024/25 and 16th in 2023/24 (Mina joined halfway through).

In that first season he joined, Mina really helped stabilise the backline of Claudio Ranieri’s side. He then became a defensive pillar under Davide Nicola.

Early on in his stint, national media outlets branded Mina a ‘gladiator’.

In recent times, Mina’s form has actually alerted other clubs, with outfits and Brazil and Saudi Arabia having been hopeful of a transfer.

But Mina showed real loyalty to his current club, signing a new contract in May 2025 to keep him tied to Cagliari until 2028.

Mina was very popular with a lot of Everton fans during his time at Goodison and seemingly, his time at Cagliari is now materialising in a fairly similar way.
