Paul Brown has claimed that Wayne Rooney could eventually end up at Everton.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist suggested that the DC United manager would love to return to Goodison Park and could eventually take the reins.

Rooney started his playing career with Everton and become the club’s youngest ever goalscorer when he netted a brace against Wrexham in 2002. He then went onto become the Premier League’s youngest goalscorer ever after scoring against Arsenal just days before his 17th birthday.

After spending two years with his boyhood club, Rooney was sold to Manchester United before making a brief comeback 13 years after he left the Toffees.

The 37-year-old has moved into management in recent years, joining DC United from Derby County last summer. However, Brown has hinted that he could be looking to return to the Premier League.

When asked if he could ever manage Everton, Brown said: “It’s hard to say. That looks quite a long way off, but who knows? I’m sure Rooney would love to take on a job like that at some point.

“He’s had an interesting history with the club, veering from being the hero to villain in the eyes of many there. Last time, when he left, I don’t think he left under particularly happy circumstances.

“He’s trying to make a name for himself now as a manager, and it’s entirely possible one day that he might end up being at Everton. But I think we’re a long way from that right now.”

Will Wayne Rooney end up at Everton?

Rooney has had an interesting career in management so far, having narrowly kept Derby County up in the 2020-21 season after previously sitting six points adrift in the Championship relegation zone. He was unable to keep them in the second tier the following campaign, though the club were in Administration and had also endured a point deduction.

The former attacker now plies his trade in the MLS, though he is unlikely to settle for a spot in the US given the lack of competitiveness and talent. Though Rooney does currently manage some familiar faces in Christian Benteke, Ravel Morrison and Mateusz Klich.

It definitely seems a long way off for Everton to consider bringing Rooney in and they are definitely in no shape to be taking that risk right now.

He needs to prove himself first and definitely wants to avoid making the same mistakes as the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. The former took the same route with the Rams as Rooney did, though took too big of a leap when he arrived at Chelsea shortly after.
