Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has been an absolute machine this season, appearing in every game for his club.
Under Sean Dyche, the Everton team resembles a physical one, and Onana is always at the heart of it, ferociously winning duels in the middle of the park, and he has maintained his fitness superbly.
Many may wonder how Onana has managed to avoid injury given his constant minutes in such a physical role, but he has now opened up on his fitness routine.
Onana’s supreme fitness
Speaking to Belgian outlet SudInfo Sports, Onana claimed that a number of protocols have been put in place to manage his fitness.
“Everything is going well. It’s true that I have already played more than 1,000 minutes in matches, whether at club or with the selection,” he stated whilst away with Belgium on International duty.
“But I work with my physical trainer, who comes from Switzerland, with whom I have regular sessions. My physiotherapist, Benjamin Tubiermont, also comes almost every two weeks. I do cryotherapy as well as breathing exercises.
“There is a whole protocol that I have put in place for a long time to help me recover between matches. But it’s true that, during my first season in the Premier League – the most intense championship – I perhaps had to adapt certain things according to my needs.”
Rock in the middle

Although Everton have been disappointing as a team overall, Onana’s commitment cannot be blamed for the Toffees’ struggles, with the Belgian playing in 98% of Everton’s Premier League minutes.
Clocking over 1000 minutes by October is something Everton may be concerned about when it comes to Onana’s future fitness, but it is clear that he is managing his body and condition well.
The £100k-per-week star was a shining light in an underwhelming season last year, and with another year of struggle likely ahead, Everton will look to him to be the driving force in the team again.
