Everton goalkeeper Tom King actually holds a Guinness World Record – as James Garner has just discovered.

When quizzed by the Toffees on how well he knows his teammates at Finch Farm, the Everton No.37 was left stumped when asked to name the player who has a Guinness World Record to his name.

The social media team eventually told James Garner that it was King after he incorrectly guessed Jordan Pickford and Mark Travers – but what did the goalkeeper do?

Rarely-seen Tom King holds Guinness World Record for longest football goal

The 31-year-old is yet to play under David Moyes since arriving at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on a free transfer back in August, but he does lay claim to being the only man at Everton with a Guinness World Record.

King earned the prize during his time at Newport County during the 2020/21 campaign, when he scored from 96.01m (105 yds) out during a 1-1 draw against Cheltenham in January 2021.

His strike beat the previous record of 91.9m (100.5 yards) set by former Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic during a 1-1 draw between Stoke and Southampton in November 2013.

Like Garner – who Leon Osman rates highly – was upon hearing about the record, King was left surprised after being told he had cemented his name in the history books.

After taking the crown from Begovic, the Wales international told the official Newport County website: “I’m absolutely delighted because it’s not something that I intentionally set out to do.

“I’m sure it will be talked about for a long time to come, so I’m proud and I’m sure my family will be extremely proud too.

“I’ll have to drop Asmir a message to send my commiserations, but, in all honesty, it’s different territory for me because I never dreamt of being in the books that you get for Christmas every year.

“Hopefully I might actually read it if I get one for Christmas this year. I’m delighted and hopefully no one beats it for a long time now so I can show my grandkids!”

It will take an otherworldly effort to beat that strike from 96.01m out, so we feel pretty confident in saying King can enjoy this record for a considerable amount of time.
