Jamie Carragher has big doubts about highly-rated Everton player, says he doesn’t get the hype

Everton were truly abysmal last night, and ultimately deserved nothing from their trip to Chelsea.

However, pre-match, it was a game where a quiet confidence was building that they might be able to snatch a result.

After all, both Burnley and Sheffield United had recently managed to do so, and with a far better squad, the Toffees had every chance of copying their success.

In the end, it was not to be, and with Sean Dyche’s tactical naivety combining with the pure dross served up by the players, they were played off the park, losing 6-0.

Jamie Carragher does not rate Everton player

Speaking live on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football just last night, Jamie Carragher was unsurprisingly cutthroat in his analysis of Everton.

After all, whilst he may have spent his entire career with Liverpool, before that he was a notorious Evertonian, and thus his interest in the Toffees is clear to see even if he often remains biased towards his former employers.

Well, his assessment of one player last night was certainly without bias, as he outlined his disappointment with Amadou Onana.

He told Dave Jones and Dele Alli: ‘It was interesting he mentioned two players there who he brought off, the central midfield players.

‘I actually think James Garner has done a good job for Dyche since he has been there but I must say this, Onana is a player who Everton may have to sell in the summer, with the situation they find themselves in financially.

‘He came in with a huge reputation, Frank Lampard brought him in, he looks the part, did really well for Belgium at Wembley and there is talk of him going to other bigger clubs. But I don’t see it.

‘Ever since he has been there, I don’t know what he is. I don’t know if he’s a holding midfield player. Does he get forward? Does he get involved? The only thing I see him do is see him try and lift the crowd, that’s all I ever see him do when he plays for Everton so this has been going on far too long.’

Amadou Onana was invisible yesterday

It was hoped that by bringing in the 22-year-old midfielder instead of Andre Gomes, the Toffees would enjoy far more stability in the engine room and hopefully be able to strangle Chelsea out of possession in key areas.

However, if anything, he made them more open than ever.

It was alarming the ease with which the hosts cut through Everton, and despite James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite both putting in terrible respective displays, they were hardly aided by the invisibility of their midfield protection.

Both Onana and James Garner were invisible, and it’s tough to remember a single second ball they won between the two of them.

It marks such a sorry state of affairs within this squad, that this duo, who are supposed to be some of Dyche’s most promising players, went completely missing in such a vital game.

Chelsea were there for the taking, as their blistering start showcased.

But once a few mistakes crept in, the lack of character amongst the players became abundantly clear.

Onana was not the only one to disappoint, but given how high people’s expectations are for the Belgium international and the outside interest he commands, his poor performance is harder to take.
