Everton, as the seemingly endless riches of Farhad Moshiri have dwindled out, have recently been forced to sell to keep the club afloat.
Having amassed loan fees in excess of £350m, and posted losses of over £430m across the last four years, it seems the once-historic institution is drowning in its own fiscal mismanagement, seeking to balance a funds-draining stadium build with the need to bolster a playing squad worthy of retaining their Premier League status.
As such, stars such as Romelu Lukaku, Richarlison and Anthony Gordon have all been allowed to leave for hefty fees, with the latter’s move to Newcastle United perhaps a path that others could now tread.
That is at least what The Athletic are reporting, with journalist Jacob Whitehead detailing two stars who the Magpies could try and pry from Merseyside.

He notes: ‘Palhinha is potentially unrealistic, but Onana could be viable. Newcastle previously took advantage of Everton’s financial situation when signing Anthony Gordon in January — and with finances still perilous, Sean Dyche’s side will likely need to sell one of Onana or centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite in the next year.
‘The Belgium international is raw but massively talented; the drawback is the length of time it could take him to integrate into Howe’s system.’
How good is Jarrad Branthwaite?
Whilst the departure of the former LOSC Lille man would hurt massively, given how supremely exciting the future of the £100k-a-week maestro seems, the midfield is surprisingly a position of relative strength for Dyche.
Boasting the likes of James Garner, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Idrissa Gana Gueye, all of whom could combine to fill the creative and defensive void the Belgium international might leave, Branthwaite’s touted exit would instead offer a far greater blow.
After all, the 21-year-old titan has only just begun earning a consistent place in Everton’s starting side, but already plays like a refined centre-back who has been performing at the top level for years.
He is earning his rewards for such fine form too, with Liverpool legend John Aldridge even noting: “I don’t want to upset any Evertonians by saying this, and whether Liverpool would buy from Everton is another matter as it rarely happens, but I certainly think he has got the ability to go on and become a leading figure and a starter for England.’

These claims are reinforced by the data behind his stellar season thus far, with the England U21 maintaining 2.1 tackles, 4.3 clearances and 8.3 ball recoveries per game in the league to justify the £25m price tag touted in the summer, via Sofascore.
Branthwaite and Onana are the future of Everton, and yet it could once again be damaged by their transfer failures of the past. There would be no greater insult than if the Magpies were to once again snag one of their top young talents.
