Andre Gomes has received heavy praise after his ‘impressive’ return to the Everton squad today.
Andre Gomes hadn’t featured for Everton since May 2022 after enjoying a successful loan spell with Lille last season.
The midfielder returned to Merseyside in the summer but has been sidelined with a calf injury since pre-season.
Gomes finally made his comeback this afternoon though, replacing the injured Idrissa Gueye inside half an hour.
The Toffees already found themselves 2-0 down by the time the 30-year-old was introduced, but Gomes still managed to have a positive impact on his return to the team as he netted a consolation for Everton late on.
Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas heaped praise on Gomes’ display on his social media.
Following Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s disallowed goal, one post on his X account said: “A real shame to see that goal chalked off. More good play from Gomes, who is having an impressive return.”

Following on from Gomes’ goal, Thomas wrote: “He’s been brilliant on his comeback and fires in from 18 yards out to give Everton a chance.”
Where does Andre Gomes stand now?
Andre Gomes will have definitely given Sean Dyche a selection headache ahead of their next match against Manchester City midweek.
The Portuguese star bagged his first goal for Everton since the 3-2 win over Hull City in the FA Cup almost two years ago. He also completed 81% of his passes, made two key passes and completed all of his attempted long balls.
Liverpool Echo’s Chris Beesley went onto refer to his comeback as a ‘talismanic return’ in his player ratings, naming Gomes as Everton’s man of the match.
Both Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye were poor in midfield, and both should be concerned for their positions due to Gomes’ excellence. Though the latter may be forced to make way if injured, with Gomes potentially being handed the opportunity for a run of games to make himself a regular in the team once again.
