Everton have been told that their ‘wheels are finally coming off’ after their defeat to Wolves today.

Everton headed into their trip to Molineux Stadium following back-to-back defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

The Toffees looked set for safety with four wins on the bounce, but things started to look offbeat when they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup quarter-final by Fulham on home soil.

Defeats against two of the ‘Big Six’ sides were forgivable, especially when they endured questionable decisions made by the referee.

However, fans have been left extremely frustrated by a 3-0 thrashing by Wolves this afternoon, leaving them still one point above the relegation zone in the Premier League table.

After Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas claimed that Matheus Cunha’s goal to double Wolves’ lead was ‘far too easy’, the Echo’s live blog went onto slam Everton after they almost conceded a fourth.

The live blog post read: “Hwang has the ball in the net but as happens these days, the flag goes up for offside as the ball goes in the net. Scary how Everton are being ripped apart though. After a heroic December, the wheels are finally coming off their tired-looking troops.”

Despite a fairly even clash in terms of possession, Everton finished the game in the Midlands with zero shots on target.

What has caused Everton’s dip in form?

Their downfall appears to have followed Abdoulaye Doucoure‘s injury, with the midfielder being absent since their last win over Burnley earlier this month.

Doucoure has netted six goals in 17 games this season, and their recent performances show just how important he actually is to the team.

Despite recent goals from the likes of Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil, it appears to be Doucoure that they have relied on.

While they were in brilliant form in December, Doucoure’s absence shows the need for another attacking threat. Recent reports linking them with Iliman Ndiaye are certainly exciting and the club should definitely be pushing for a January move for their summer target.

Though Sean Dyche will also need his strikers to get back on the scoresheet if they are to steer away from relegation, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin failing to score for The Toffees since their win over West Ham in October.
