Kieran Maguire explains the latest ‘very big issue’ the Premier League could now punish Everton for

Everton and PSR have been intertwined for many years now, even if the true extent of their ruinous relationship was only publicly outlined last season.

Kieran Maguire, as someone tied to the city due to his working commitments to Liverpool University, as well as his knowledge within the financial field, has therefore been ever-present throughout this ordeal.

And whilst many thought the worst had surely come and gone, he has now provided a fresh update that suggests things are only just getting started.

Kieran Maguire delivers fresh Everton PSR update

Speaking on today’s iteration of The Price of Football podcast, the football finance expert gave his lengthy but hugely important testimony on why Everton might once again be at the mercy of the Premier League and their PSR commission.

Maguire noted, when asked about the loans accrued by the club: ‘This is a classic ‘it depends’ answer, and the reason why I say this, and also it is a very big issue as far as Everton are concerned, because whilst the story has not got any traction over the summer, the Premier League commission is looking at Everton’s interest on loan with regards to a possible set of further charges to be levelled at the club later this year.

‘And if you read the commission reports with regards to the points deduction in 23/24, I think the conclusion that was reached by the investigating body, was that it was such a big issue and such a complex issue that they felt that they didn’t have the resources and the experience to make a decision in time before the end of the season.

‘Now the reason why it’s such a big problem is that if you take a look at Everton’s accounts for last year, in terms of cash, the total cash interest paid was somewhere in the region of £23-£24m. That does go into your PSR calculations if the interest is deemed to be part of the overall running costs of the club.

‘However, if you borrow money for the specific purpose of investing in new property, i.e. the new stadium, then that particular interest cost is added to the cost of the stadium itself, and therefore it doesn’t hit PSR until the stadium is finally built.’

This comes after the Premier League scrambled to close Everton’s PSR loophole from earlier this summer too; they will stop at nothing to disrupt the Toffees’ efforts of progression.

Not another season of Premier League punishments for Everton

It would be so incredibly harsh, but also absolutely typical, for the Premier League to once again rain down punishments on Everton after the summer they have enjoyed.

After such unrelenting turmoil throughout Sean Dyche’s leadership, through no fault of his own, at last it seemed like things were turning around for the former Burnley boss.

He was moulding the squad in his image, building for the future with Kevin Thelwell by snagging a newer, younger profile of player set to take Goodison Park by storm.

However, it will all be rendered pointless should they once again be punished by PSR because the small print of their stadium loans was incorrect or mislabelled.

Surely, after a landmark campaign which saw them twice deducted points, this upcoming one cannot be another wrought with punishments.
