Kieran Maguire now claims Everton fans have every right to be furious about latest PSR controversy

Everton have become the poster boy for PSR unrest this season, after years and years of financial mismanagement.

It did always kind of feel inevitable, but never on this scale.

Two deductions in one season amassing eight points which have plunged Sean Dyche’s side into a relegation turmoil they barely deserve, what makes things even more frustrating is how others in the Premier League continue to go unpunished despite their own obvious breaches.

And now, it seems they are not even trying to hide it.

Kieran Maguire on latest Chelsea PSR controversy

Taking to X, football finance expert Kieran Maguire has finally weighed in on the latest PSR controversy involving Chelsea.

As a side recently famed for their ability to dodge financial sanctions, having stretched out astronomical sums across ridiculously lengthy contracts, this latest decision seems to mark yet another loophole that Todd Boehly is seeking to exploit in order to further his faltering football club.

And yet, they will likely once again go unpunished.

One report, courtesy of the journalist Sam Wallace, details these fresh events: ‘Although the £63.9 million earned on conventional transfers is outstripped by the £76.5 million for those two big lumps at the south-east corner of the ground.

‘Those would be the Copthorne and Millennium hotels, sold by the parent company of Eghbali and Boehly’s consortium, Blueco 22 Limited, to its subsidiary Blueco 22 Properties Limited. Under the regulations laid out by the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules [PSR], there seems to be no obstacle to doing so.

‘What Boehly and Eghbali’s 19 cohorts of fellow Premier League owners and investors will think of this transaction is yet to be established. This is not what PSR was created to do.’

And now, Maguire offers his brief verdict: ‘If I was an Everton or Forest fan I would be fairly hacked off’.

Everton punished whilst others carry on unscathed

At this point, nothing is surprising anymore.

Everton have been the outstanding scapegoat for the Premier League’s failures throughout this season, having become the first side ever to be deducted points because of PSR, and more recently become the first side in English top-flight history to be dealt two separate points deductions in one season.

And yet, Chelsea and Manchester City continue to go unscathed.

Their alleged crimes reach far wider than the Toffees’, yet their lack of compliance has seen Everton immediately sanctioned whilst their potential punishment keeps getting kicked down the road.

It is worth questioning whether these two financial giants will ever be properly punished, and if Everton and Nottingham Forest will remain the only two to truly be hamstrung by PSR.
