Everton are a side treading water at the moment, desperately seeking to keep their head afloat for a little while longer.
And whilst they have dipped under at times, thus far Sean Dyche has proven to be a reliable life preserver.
However, the safety he offers will not last forever, especially with the players underperforming and the unrelenting off-pitch antics, as the Premier League continue their conquest to try and relegate them in the courtroom.
Well, with a second PSR case to now fight, having seen a six-point deduction administered earlier in the season, football finance expert Kieran Maguire has given his thoughts.
What Kieran Maguire said about Everton’s 2nd PSR case
Speaking on today’s iteration of the Price of Football podcast, he seeks to tackle football’s biggest financial stories, which almost always include Everton.
First chatting about Nottingham Forest, he sought to detail how a precedent could have been set by their more lenient ruling of just a four-point deduction.

Given how Dan Plumley, another finance expert suggested the two cases should not be compared, Maguire still notes: ‘Here I’m going to give a best-case scenario for Everton.
‘They get a three-point deduction and we then say ‘You’ve already been punished for going over the limit in 2021, 2022, and you’re being assessed for 2021, 2022, 2023, therefore we’re going to reduce the points deduction by two-thirds. That takes us down to one point.
‘If Everton have been proactive, if they have assisted the commission, then there is a case for saying that for good behaviour we should give you a further one-point reduction in the tariff.
‘So yes you’ve breached the rules, based on these particular set of circumstances the punishment is a 0-point deduction. And that might seem a bit strange but looking at what we’ve seen in respect of Forest there is a case for putting that forward.’
The Premier League are unlikely to be kind to Everton
Given their track record throughout this truly terrible campaign, it is unlikely that now would mark the sudden turnaround where the Premier League get sympathetic with Everton.
After all, having first lobbied for a 12-point penalty, it was only through two separate independent commissions that they ended up with only six taken.
Still a gross and unjust exaggeration of their shoddy laws, this was only made more infuriating by Nottingham Forest’s fortune in their PSR case too.

Whilst the Premier League will likely be wary over potentially being the outstanding catalyst that relegates one of their most historic clubs, they have already shown little mercy throughout this season. Whilst Maguire is optimistic, or at least hypothetically so, most Evertonians are not.
