Amadou Onana’s late header rescued a point for Everton against Crystal Palace on Monday evening.

In a largely turgid affair, Sean Dyche’s men failed to register their first Premier League win of 2024. Despite the result, the Toffees have climbed out of the relegation zone, having played one more game than Luton Town.

Jordan Ayew had given the Eagles the lead midway through the second half before a towering header from Onana saw the spoils shared.

The visitor’s goal prevented Everton from registering their ninth clean sheet of the campaign; high-flying Arsenal are the only side with a better record.

James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite have been central to Everton’s formidable backline.

Live on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher took a deeper dive into the pair’s success this season.

Jamie Carragher praises Everton duo

Carragher detailed the duo’s training methods ahead of the clash at Goodison Park, with footage of their warm-up shown.

He is always side on, that’s a big thing for me as a centre-back,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“Look at Tarkwoski here, the two of them, their body positions in the actual warm-up.

“They are constantly [side on]. Centre backs should warm up side-on. Centre-backs should play the game side on.

“You should never be square. Look at this: they are constantly switching [directions they are facing]. That’s getting ready for the game.”

Tarkowski and Branthwaite vital for Everton

Keeping Branthwaite and Tarkowski fit will be vital for Everton.

The Toffees’ defensive record is that of a top-seven side and should be enough to steer them clear of any immediate danger.

Dyche has to find a way of making his side more potent in front of goal. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal drought continues, and the sooner the 26-year-old finds form, the better.

Beto hasn’t hit the heights expected of him, with Onana and Abdoulaye Doucoure picking up much of the goalscoring burden.

Unsurprisingly, Dyche was questioned on off-the-field issues during his post-match interview.

“I don’t know the dates, we’re just waiting. For the good of football, I think it needs to be speedier for everyone,” said Dyche on Everton’s Premier League appeal.

“I don’t think anyone wants them dragged out, whatever it’s going to be, let’s get on with it. It’s not in my hands, though. Who knows.
