Don Hutchison has hailed Anthony Gordon as a ‘bargain’.

Taking to his Twitter account, the former midfielder has praised the Newcastle United winger and has suggested that he is now worth more than the £45 million that Everton made from his exit.

Gordon joined Everton’s academy in 2012 and went onto make his first team debut in the Europa League only five years later.

The forward went onto make his Premier League debut in January 2020 before spending the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan with Preston North End.

It wasn’t long before Gordon made his breakthrough with the Toffees’ first team, making 35 appearances in the following campaign and bagging six goal contributions. As a result, he was named the club’s Young Player of the Year and was heavily linked with a big money move to Chelsea.

After another impressive term at Goodison Park, Gordon decided to turn his back on his boyhood club and refused to train in order to force through a move to Newcastle United. While Everton were fighting relegation, he completed the £45m switch to Tyneside in January of this year.

Gordon has been sensational for the Magpies this season and has become one of their most important players, scoring two goals and providing two assists in only six appearances in the top flight.

Following another impressive display from the bench as Newcastle narrowly beat Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Don Hutchison heaped praise on the 22-year-old.

Writing on his Twitter after their victory, he said: “Gordon looks like a bargain”.

Anthony Gordon is not a bargain yet

At the time, fans were shocked that Newcastle were willing to pay such a hefty fee for a fairly inexperienced winger. Though it was still a bit more understandable than Chelsea wanting to cough up £60m six months earlier.

While Gordon has been even better than many expected, Everton did extremely well to earn so much cash from his exit. The attacker didn’t want to be there anymore anyway, so they definitely made the most out of a difficult situation.

Hutchison can believe he was a bargain, but there is no chance Anthony Gordon is actually worth more than someone like James Maddison. He is the real ‘bargain’.
