Micah Richards insists that Sean Dyche is ‘perfect’ for Everton

Micah Richards has stated that Sean Dyche is still the right man to lead Everton going forwards.

Since Everton succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to newly-promoted Luton Town at Goodison Park on Saturday – handing the Hatters’ their first ever Premier League win in the process – Sean Dyche has come under pressure once again.

Dyche took charge of the Toffees in January 2023, taking over from Frank Lampard. He was able to steer the Merseyside club to Premier League survival last season, but only by virtue of a win on the final day of the campaign. 

Now, the 52-year-old has taken charge of 27 games as Everton boss, in all competitions. Of those 27, he has won just eight, with only one of those coming in the Premier League so far this season. As things stand, with seven league matches played, Everton have just four points. They are also yet to earn a point at Goodison Park, and have scored just one goal at home this season.

Despite this objectively poor performance, Micah Richards has urged the club to stick with the manager.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, the former Manchester City full-back said, “Dyche is perfect for someone like Everton, just because he’s been there, he’s done it, he works on percentages…it might not be as easy on the eye as we all want, but it’s just about getting them little percentages that will make the difference staying up and going down.”

Dyche influence open to debate

Dyche is certainly a pragmatist, who has successfully fended off relegation with a defensive style of play in the past. Whether his methods are proving effective enough at Everton, though, is a matter that is open to debate.

However, there are external issues at the club conspiring against Dyche. The financial situation at the club, and the uncertainty over the future of the ownership, are matters beyond his control that can have a negative impact on players.

Equally, Dyche has been unlucky at times this season. On multiple occasions, Everton have dropped points in matches that they’ve played well in and made plenty of chances, only to be let down by poor finishing. It would be harsh to pin that on the £96,000-a-week coach.
