Micah Richards believes that Dwight McNeil and James Garner can be at the heart of a successful new era for Everton.
The new season got off to a dreadful start for Everton. Sean Dyche’s side failed to win any of their first five Premier League matches of the campaign.
However, form has improved somewhat in recent weeks. The Toffees have picked up wins against Brentford and Bournemouth, and gave a decent account of themselves against bitter rivals Liverpool in Saturday’s Merseyside derby clash at Anfield.
Whilst Everton lost 2-0 to the Reds, they were down to ten men for most of the game, and worked incredibly hard to make life difficult for the hosts. Dwight McNeil and James Garner were two Everton players who really caught the eye. Meanwhile, James Tarkowski drew praise for his performance, as did Abdoulaye Doucoure.
There is certainly now a sense that Everton are starting to head in the right direction under Dyche.

Micah Richards names James Garner and Dwight McNeil as two great Everton hopes
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast in the wake of the Merseyside derby, former Manchester City full-back Micah Richards said, “I like the way Everton are shaping up…McNeil’s back in to some sort of form. I like what Garner is doing in midfield with Onana and Doucoure…They’re building something.”
It took a while for Garner to get settled at Everton since joining from Manchester United in a £15 million deal in the summer of 2022. The £30,000-a-week ace has looked far more assured and confident in his play so far this season, though.
McNeil also joined Everton in the summer of 2022, arriving from Burnley for a fee of £20 million. Dyche will be very familiar with the 23-year-old winger’s strengths, having worked with him during his time at the helm at Turf Moor.
These are two young players, performing well, who could become true stars for the Toffees. There are early signs emerging that Dyche has assembled an exciting group of players with plenty of potential.
