Everton fans are now looking forward to the Merseyside derby on Saturday, but one piece of news ahead of the game is currently causing some concern.

The Merseyside derby is always a fascinating encounter.

Last season’s clash at Goodison Park was particularly enjoyable, as goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jarrad Branthwaite sealed a 2-0 win for Everton.

This time round it’s a little bit different. Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League by a big distance, whilst Everton are now five points above the drop zone.

Arne Slot has already helped Everton slightly ahead of the game, offering some insight into a tactic that could expose Liverpool in defence.

However, Everton fans aren’t so confident after hearing some news involving the Merseyside derby.

Michael Oliver appointed for Everton vs Liverpool clash

Referee appointments are always judged by fans heading into a game, with so many errors and issues popping up on the field from game to game.

The Premier League have announced that Michael Oliver will take charge of the Merseyside derby.

He admitted it was a mistake not to send Jordan Pickford off for his challenge on Virgil van Dijk back in 2020, which ended up in a long-term injury for the Dutchman.

In 2020, he also sent Richarlison off for a challenge on Thiago.

So there’s plenty of previous with Mr. Oliver.
