Everton have been told that the decision to disallow Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal was ‘very soft’.
The Toffees headed to Tottenham Hotspur having not conceded a goal in their previous four games in the Premier League. However, they found themselves 2-0 down after only 18 minutes.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had halved the deficit only five minutes into the second half when Andre Gomes slotted through a lovely ball for the striker to tuck home.
However, the goal was called back for a VAR check and was eventually overturned following a foul by Gomes on Emerson Royal in the build-up.
Despite a solid second-half display from Everton, Gomes’ late goal proved only to be a consolation and the Toffees were left frustrated by another controversial VAR decision.
Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has had his say on the disallowed goal, claiming that the foul was ‘not enough’ to disallow Calvert-Lewin’s fourth of the campaign.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Dean said: “It’s small contact but not enough for me to overturn it.
“It’s minimal contact, they’ve recommended to look at it, the assistant referee had a good view originally would’ve said, ‘no foul, no foul’, they’ve shown a picture of it but it’s very soft.”
Did the VAR decision cost Everton the game?
While not the worst decision we have ever seen VAR make, it is certainly a frustrating one for Everton.
There is definitely contact from Andre Gomes on Emerson Royal, but the game has gone mad if that is enough to warrant a free-kick. Footballers simply can’t make any kind of contact with the opposition if that is the case.

It’s not good enough for the officials and Everton will be rightfully annoyed by their mistake, but that still doesn’t make up for a very poor first 20 minutes from the visitors.
Everton can’t be that lazy from kick off when they are playing a team like Tottenham, because they clearly have the talent in the likes of Heung-min Son and Richarlison to punish them.
Everton probably deserved more than defeat in the end and who knows what could have happened if Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s goal was given, but nothing can be done about it now.
It brings an end to their brilliant winning streak but it is not something to be concerned about for fans, who surely won’t have expected an easy game against Ange Postecoglou’s side.
