Nigel Martyn explains the similarities between this Everton side and the one he played in

My Revenge On Ben Foster

This Everton side do not look like they’ll emulate the 2004/05 team, who made it into the top four.

A Champions League challenge looked likely earlier on in this crazy campaign and it’s only Everton’s home form that’s held them back.

During an exclusive interview with Nigel Martyn, he shared the similarities he sees between the current crop and the David Moyes side he kept goal for.

He also outlined what Everton need to do to handle the pressure and ensure European qualification.

“It’s just taking care of the games one by one and winning the games that you should win,” said Martyn.

“There’s never anything guaranteed but as a group of players, you’ve just got to come together and give it everything you’ve got.

“If someone said at the start of the season, with four games left you’d need nine or ten points to get into Europe, you’d take it. It’s here now, so grab the bull by the horns and go for it.

“We had a great team spirit during my time there and work ethic for each other. I see that in the Everton team now.

“We weren’t the highest goalscorers but we were defensively strong. There’s a lot of similarities with the Everton side now.”

Martyn’s Everton side kept their nerve and sealed an unlikely fourth place finish under Moyes.

If Carlo Ancelotti’s side don’t at least qualify for Europe in some capacity, it will feel like they’ve come up short, especially given the flying start to the campaign.
