Oliver Glasner to Nottingham Forest is hard to accept as Everton back David Moyes

Despite a poor end to last season, it seems Everton are persisting with David Moyes.

The Toffees had European football in their sights, but a seven-game winless run to end the campaign saw the club finish a disappointing 13th.

There were several factors behind this slump.

Injuries to the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and Idrissa Gueye didn’t help, and there were also some poor decisions.

But David Moyes also played his part, with many feeling he did not rotate enough, and was too slow to make changes in certain games.

There has been little to suggest Moyes’ job is in trouble. On the contrary, Angus Kinnear talked up Moyes’ ability to bring stability, and the Scot looks all set to lead the team into next season.

Not everyone is on board with that, and news of Oliver Glasner’s move to Nottingham Forest may do little to improve their mood.

Oliver Glasner to Nottingham Forest suggests Everton would have had a chance

First and foremost, it is important to acknowledge the job Moyes has done since returning to Everton for a second spell.

He had a terrific impact in 2024/25 after he replaced Sean Dyche, and there were no fears of a relegation battle in the final weeks of the season, which was most welcome.

And this term, there were again zero fears about relegation.

But in 2025/26, Everton did only finish one point better off than they did the previous season.

Some have suggested now is the right time to part ways with Moyes in favour of hiring a head coach who can take Everton onwards. Someone whose focus is more on growth and showing ambition, rather than providing stability.

One man who has shown that is Oliver Glasner, who did wonders at Crystal Palace before leaving them this summer.

The feeling was that Glasner was going to go to a top club, one that was potentially in the Champions League.

But it was surprisingly reported by The Telegraph yesterday that Glasner is to become the new head coach at Nottingham Forest, who have sacked Vitor Pereira.

While Forest are a big club, it really is a surprise Glasner has gone there.

And it suggests that Everton, who are a bigger club, might have actually had a genuine chance to get him had they not backed Moyes and made a move.

But that is the problem.

Everton, through the comments of Kinnear, were quite happy to back Moyes and now potentially great managerial opportunities are passing the club by. Andoni Iraola was another who was linked with the Everton job.

Glasner could well have been an incredibly exciting appointment by Everton, based on the way he transformed the fortunes of Palace.

And clearly, he was willing to join a club not in a European competition.

Hopefully Moyes proves everyone wrong and actually gets Everton into Europe next season. But given how 2025/26 panned out, and the role he played in the end, that feels unlikely.
