Of the countless impressive performers for Everton yesterday, it once again remains hard to overlook Dwight McNeil as one of the standouts.

Having endured a tough opening few months to the campaign, suffering from injuries and losing fitness rapidly, it feels like in recent weeks we are finally seeing the true potential of the man Frank Lampard signed back in 2022.

With a wicked left foot and a work rate unparalleled in the Premier League, his reunion with Sean Dyche has been timely in a period of his career where many could fade into obscurity.

Well, with two goals and two assists in his last four matches, all of which have been wins, the 24-year-old is certainly thriving.

Having floated in the corner for Amadou Onana’s opener, he was creative yet combative down the flank, and has earned deserved praise.

And yet, it would be hard to overlook the man who scored that all-important first, as the true standout yesterday.

How did Everton’s Amadou Onana play vs Burnley?

Few have ever doubted the quality of Everton’s Belgian midfielder, who only continues to impress with each passing week.

His first year was always expected to be a transitional one, given the 22-year-old boasted all the physical attributes needed to succeed alongside small glimpses of his technical prowess.

Well, as his confidence in this new country has grown, so too have his performances, which are arguably reaching a career-high thus far.

He has been an integral cog in the fine run Dyche’s men are enjoying, having won ten of their last 14 in all competitions. Yesterday was no different, with Onana’s goal far from the only thing that helped him stand out against Burnley.

Enjoying an 87% pass accuracy, he was as proficient as ever despite the Toffees only enjoying 38% of the ball. Such is his well-rounded skillset, he is just as adept at sitting back and breaking up play as he is forging opportunities when afforded possession. As such, he would make four clearances, two tackles and one block, whilst also winning 11 of the 14 duels (79%) he competed in, via Sofascore.

Statman Dave took to X to laud such a stellar showing, outlining a similar array of statistics alongside his caption: ‘Wonderful performance’.

With McNeil thriving, it would have taken something special to outshine him when facing his old club. Fortunately, in Onana, Everton do have something very special.
