Carlo Ancelotti made some statement additions in his first summer transfer window at Everton.

Eyebrows were raised around the Premier League when James Rodriguez joined Everton from Real Madrid.

The same could be said about Allan’s arrival, as he joined from Serie A giants Napoli in a £21.7m deal.

What would you be doing with Nathan Patterson this summer if you were Angus Kinnear? 👋

Surely the writing is on the wall now?

Ancelotti also signed Norwich City centre-back Ben Godfrey, and that transfer was worth up to £30m, which was a significant investment.

Godfrey was loved by Ancelotti, but his career since leaving Finch Farm hasn’t gone to plan at all.

Ben Godfrey has really struggled since leaving Everton

Godfrey was regarded as one of the best defenders in the country when he plied his trade under Ancelotti.

The former Everton boss was a huge admirer of the two-cap England international, as he previously stated: “If Gareth is watching Ben Godfrey then he is right. Gareth doesn’t need advice from me but to see and watch Ben Godfrey at this moment, in this period, is a pleasure for any manager.

“He has surprised me because I didn’t know him so well (when he signed). He was a signing from the club, from our scouts, and he has been really good. He has been able to adapt very quickly to different positions.”

However, since Ancelotti’s departure, Godfrey hasn’t been able to maintain that same level, and in fact, he’s regressed.

After four years on Merseyside, the Toffees decided to sanction his sale to Atalanta in a deal worth around £10m two summers ago.

But that move hasn’t worked out at all, as he’s been shipped out on loan to Ipswich Town, Sheffield United and most recently to Danish side Brondby.

Now, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, Godfrey is set to join Rangers on an initial loan deal, which could become permanent at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old will be desperate to revitalise his career in Scotland, and it’s an opportunity to play in Europe.

Hopefully, Godfrey can get back to his best and be a success at Ibrox.
