Everton suffered a 3-1 defeat to West Ham United at Goodison Park on Saturday, leaving them firmly in a relegation battle.

After being handed back four points, Sean Dyche was hopeful of a positive result against The Hammers this weekend.

Having led through Beto‘s header, The Toffees seemed on course to extend their gap to eight points on 18th-placed Luton Town.

But their profligate nature kicked in, missing several big chances, and ultimately, rather unlike Dyche’s team this season, they shipped three goals in the final 30 minutes of the game.

Paul Robinson, former Tottenham Hotspur and England goalkeeper, issued a damning verdict on Goodison Park during his live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Robinson’s half-time thoughts circled around the Everton sphere, as he made a brutal assessment of Everton’s goalscoring woes.

The BBC pundit, simply said: “If you don’t like seeing goals go to Goodison Park.”

Although three were scored by West Ham, the game ended up producing four goals in the second half, so his comments didn’t age particularly well.

Though from an Everton viewpoint, their solitary goal was the very least they should’ve had, after failing to convert several big chances.

The hosts had a 2.88 xG, compared to West Ham’s 1.46, so it was evident to see where they came up stuck yesterday.

Beto’s missed spot-kick, in particular, left the hosts ruing.

Everton’s summer business has been a disaster

Since arriving from Udinese in a £25m deal last summer, Beto hasn’t lived up to expectations and has just two goals to his name in the Premier League.

The Toffees also outlaid £15m on the signature of Youssef Chermiti from Sporting and the 2004-born forward is still awaiting his first league start.

On loan from Villarreal, Arnaut Danjuma has barely made an impact and has been plagued by injury in recent weeks.

So Everton’s goalscoring woes this term can largely be placed on their failed recruitment, having spent over £40m on attackers.

Jack Harrison was also brought in from Leeds on a loan deal and his attacking output just hasn’t been at the level required in this division.

The former England under-21 international has struck just three league goals whilst laying on as many.

So if Everton do survive the drop, they’ll likely need to reinvest in the forward department and consider moving on a few to help facilitate those transfer plans.
