Pundit says £30m Everton player is ‘terrible’ and he’s really bothered him

Everton are often one of the most well-liked clubs, due to their status as a side that never really upsets the apple cart.

A plethora of charity work only adds to this notion, with the Toffees never really doing much to disrupt things.

For 30 years now, they have simply existed, allowing their best players to leave with relative ease, and finding cut-price replacements just to stay afloat.

However, in the last decade or so, a shift has seen a few more controversial figures come and go from Goodison Park.

Rival fans detested the likes of Richarlison and Neal Maupay, and it marked a real shift in strategy to start acquiring this personality of player.

Whilst not quite on their level, Jordan Pickford is another who comes under intense, and often undeserved scrutiny for his antics.

The latest example of unwarranted criticism actually came after his performance for England, where his side narrowly came from behind to beat Slovakia at Euro 2024.

It was far from a good performance, largely due to a misfiring attack, and other than the goal he had little else to do.

And yet, it was one moment in the dying embers of the game which sparked Dutch pundit Johan Derksen into action, leading him onto a furious tirade at his antics.

His quotes are compiled by FCupdate, and read: What really bothers me about that team is that terrible Everton goalkeeper. A goalkeeper with sagging socks, who looks like a goalkeeper from the sixth team of an amateur club.

‘Did you see how happy he was at the end, when he had that ball? It wasn’t good! He had to be admitted, that guy. He was lying there and I think he is not well anymore

‘He has been behaving like this all year at Everton.’

Everton’s Jordan Pickford has just got personality

Like him or loathe him, you cannot attack Pickford for simply having personality.

Especially in today’s contemporary football landscape, where every player is media trained to the nth degree.

Seldom do we get a shred of humility or energy from player interviews, but instead these copy and pasted phrases where they seem to say something of note, but really say nothing at all.

Pickford naturally has endured a few interviews like this, but for the most part, he wears his heart on his sleeve and is not afraid to let his passion bubble over onto the pitch.

This particular moment, coming in the 120th minute of a European Championships knockout match, saw the £30m shot-stopper effectively end the match.

It had been a stressful one, and were the match 30 seconds shorter, it would have been one of the most embarrassing England results in the country’s history.

Pickford can be forgiven for allowing a bit of his personality to shine through after such a liberating moment that confirmed his side’s place in the next round.

It’s ironic too, because Jude Bellingham’s action towards Pickford mid-match certainly said it all about what his teammates think of him.
