Rafael Benitez made big £5m transfer mistake at Everton which Newcastle have benefitted from now

During Farhad Moshiri’s reign, Everton’s recruitment has been pretty poor with the £37m acquisition of Moise Kean a notable example.

After a few years of spending big in the transfer market, Everton were hit with Financial Fair Play sanctions and had to dramatically cut their expenditure.

Ultimately, that’s forced them to operate in a different market and they did have the chance to sign a talented player for just £5m who’s now worth almost ten times that just a few years on.

Everton turned down the chance to sign Tino Livramento for just £5m

Everton actually turned down the chance to sign Tino Livramento for £5m during Rafael Benitez’s short reign.

Benitez went against the recruitment team’s advice and instead signed Nathan Patterson for more than double the price six months later.

Now, Livramento is an established regular for Newcastle United having completed a £40m switch from Southampton in 2023.

The 21-year-old’s impressive performances have earned him a call-up to the senior England squad this month and he could make his debut this evening as Lee Carsley’s side take on Greece.

A massive transfer blunder indeed.

Everton need to find a long-term successor for Seamus Coleman

James Garner has had to play out of position at right-back in the absence of Seamus Coleman, who is currently sidelined through injury.

Patterson clearly isn’t fancied by Dyche as made just nine starts last term before suffering a hamstring injury during a 6-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Everton did look at signing Jackson Tchatchoua during the summer, so perhaps they’ll reignite their interest in January.
