Everton star Amadou Onana has been excellent for the club since his arrival last year, but he has been criticised for his discipline.

The 22-year-old was sent off for Belgium in their 3-2 victory against Austria, with the midfielder receiving two yellow cards, and this has highlighted an issue with him.

He has picked up 10 yellow cards in 45 games for the club since his arrival last year, but despite not receiving a red card for his club yet, this could become a concern for Everton in the long run.

Onana slammed for red card

The midfielder’s dismissal against Austria was his third in his career, whilst he has also received 19 yellow cards in 107 senior appearances for Everton, Hamburg and Lille.

Belgian journalist Marc Degryse has now slammed Onana following his red card, highlighting his lack of discipline as a problem to Voetbal Niuews.

“By the way, Onana got another yellow card, which remains a problem as far as I’m concerned,” he stated.

“At the World Cup he was already suspended for the crucial match against Croatia. A player who is so important to the team cannot always afford that.

“It was almost predictable that he would leave after the break, it is really a work point for Onana. In this way he brought Austria back into the match.”

Although his dismissal against Austria was almost detrimental for Belgium, his lack of red cards for Everton means that there is no major issue with Onana yet.

However, the club will likely be keeping a close eye on his yellow card haul, and may perhaps become worried should he continue to receive so many.

His combative style of play in the middle of the park means that he is almost destined to receive so many cautions, but Everton may hope that with age and experience, he is able to gain better control over his actions within games.

If he does continue to pick up so many cards, and start receiving reds, then it will become a bit of a concern for Sean Dyche. However, right now, Onana is a key player at Goodison Park, and as long as he delivers strong performances, there will be little worry about this aspect of his play.
