Everton are now interested in signing former Aston Villa defender Ashley Young who is available on a free transfer this summer.

The ‘outstanding’ Young was released by the Villains and is now attracting attention from Sean Dyche’s side, as well as newly promoted Luton Town.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who report that both clubs have spoken with the 38-year-old about a potential deal this summer.

Young has a wealth of Premier League experience and offers a versatility that could be useful as the Blues look to plug gaps across multiple positions with limited finances.

Indeed, Young can play in both defence and midfield, but no matter where he has played, he has struggled to gain a result when he has played at Goodison Park.

In 15 visits to Everton’s famous stadium, Young has been on the losing side in five of those games, while drawing on four other occasions.

Indeed, Everton fans will hope that the former England international would have a better Goodison Park record should he make the switch to Merseyside this summer.

Ashley may not be so young anymore, but he could still be a solid addition to Sean Dyche’s Everton squad

Capable of filling in a number of positions, Young could be a shrewd signing for Sean Dyche as his experience could prove to be invaluable.

At 38-years-old, Young may only have one year left in the tank, but he was superb for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa last season, assisting the Villains in securing European football.

Everton need to invest heavily in their forward line, and the £3.5m departure of Ellis Simms to Coventry City ensures that the Blues need yet another forward.

With that in mind, securing such a versatile and experienced international on a free transfer could allow the Toffees to invest what kitty they have in key areas.
