A new right-back is on the agenda for Everton this winter.
As Seamus Coleman battles against injuries at the age of 37 and Nathan Patterson struggles to convince David Moyes, the Toffees badly need a new face in that area – where Jake O’Brien has been deputising this term.
Everton want Zakaria El Ouahdi from Genk – although the Moroccan is currently likelier to join Crystal Palace as talks advance.
18 months ago in the summer of 2024, the Toffees were still having problems in the right-back department and wanted to sign Kieran Trippier from Newcastle.
A deal never materialised for Everton – but we believe it could now.
Newcastle could sanction cut-price Kieran Trippier exit instead of losing England international for free
It can be hard to find value for money in the winter transfer market, as clubs are reluctant to sell talented players during a season.
Say Newcastle offer us Kieran Trippier for £5m – would YOU do it? 🤔
213 Premier League appearances and 54 caps for England… 🔥
Therefore, finding a long-term solution at right-back might be more of a summer job for Everton, but a short-term fix could be found now in Trippier.
The reliable Craig Hope recently told YouTube that it is unlikely Newcastle will offer the England international a new contract, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.
When asked if he can see the 35-year-old being offered an extension, the respected journalist replied: “Kieran Trippier, out of contract at the end of the (season) – do I expect him to sign a new deal? No.”
It means the Magpies can either lose Trippier for nothing, or recoup a bit of cash by sanctioning a sale this month.
Everton wanted Kieran Trippier in 2024 and he was keen to leave Newcastle
Reliable outlets like The Athletic and the BBC claimed back in the summer of 2024 that Everton were keen to sign the man born in Bury, and that he was eager to leave after losing his spot to Tino Livramento.
Could Nathan Patterson have offered Everton more from right-back than Jake O’Brien? 🤔
Livramento remains the first choice under Eddie Howe, who also took the captaincy from Trippier and handed the armband to Bruno Guimaraes instead.
So, we would presume Trippier himself may jump at the chance to be a regular once again for a stable Premier League side, under an experienced manager he can trust in Moyes.
Newcastle only paid £12m to sign the defender from Atletico Madrid back in January 2022, so even a deal in the region of £5m would be worth doing in terms of PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules).
Either that, or the Magpies can lose him for nothing in six months.
