Rob Green says 30-year-old Everton player will be feeling ‘awful’ now

Everton, after a three-week break from club football, are just three days away from a return to Premier League action.

For half of the squad, it has been a welcome break, much-needed after such a gruelling spell in which they have not won since December.

However, for the rest, international football has beckoned.

Whilst some will return buoyed by their fine performances, it was not positive for all involved. Jordan Pickford, surprisingly, is one such example subscribed to the latter.

What Rob Green said about Jordan Pickford

Speaking on Channel 4’s highlights show, Rob Green, who made 12 appearances for England, offered his verdict on Pickford’s error.

The former Sunderland man, whose loose pass into midfield directly resulted in the opener, left his side with an early mountain to climb.

And whilst Marouane Fellaini also lambasted the moment, Green was more sympathetic, providing an insight into how he will be feeling following the gaffe.

He noted: ‘It’s horrible. You have to say from Jordan Pickford’s perspective. It’s the first time it’s ever happened for England, it’s the first big mistake where it’s led to a goal. You have to move on.

‘But in that moment you think right I’ll deal with this after the game. He’ll be feeling awful now but during the game don’t let it affect you because in the game the worst thing you can do is make another mistake.

‘You saw the relief when we equalised, that’s how much it meant to him, so just get on with it and make the next thing the best thing you do. And he did make a good save.’

Jordan Pickford needs to refocus for Everton

Whilst this blunder will be a damaging one for his England reputation, it was his first across 60 caps for the national side. He has plenty of credit in the bank, and Gareth Southgate is unlikely to consider removing him from the side due to one stray pass.

So, upon returning to Goodison Park now, he must refocus on the more important task at hand.

After all, Everton’s issues are far more plentiful and prevalent than anything going on within the international setup, as falling to relegation could leave the club in complete financial ruin.

Pickford has been integral for the Toffees across the last two seasons, and arguably the biggest, most consistent factor in their continued survival.

His saves during Frank Lampard’s first season were truly mesmeric, and the following campaign his penalty save away at Leicester City proved to be the key moment which retained their top-flight status.

Sean Dyche will be relying on him once again as the run-in nears, and the hope is that this latest blunder for England does not dent his confidence too much.
