Everton are a club that have been poorly treated in recent years. That much is indisputable.
However, after a while, there needs to be a real meaningful change in the club’s ethos that actually propels them into a brighter and more sustainable future.
VAR may be an unpopular part of the Premier League, and financial restrictions may be a term that most fans are sick of now, but they are unfortunate mainstays.
Everton have to flip the script, but they have not been helped on the opening day of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Sean Dyche delivers Everton penalty assessment
Chatting to Everton’s X account after his side’s loss to Brighton, Sean Dyche couldn’t give his review without offering his verdict on the controversial penalty incident.
Being the turning point early in the second half, Simon Hooper was sent to review his decision after initially pointing to the spot. And yet, despite VAR failing to show Everton’s penalty claim on the monitor, he still decided to go with the recommendation from those at Stockley Park.

Dyche was baffled, as he noted: ’Second half we started brightly again, I thought we created a good chance, we get a penalty. They said it was for Dom’s foot landing on their defender but their defender was out of control on the floor and drags his foot along. For me it’s a penalty, but I’m bound to say that.
‘We don’t get penalties, we know that.
‘And then the frustration of a simple decision gone wrong and they capitalise on it. That’s two moments, two big moments in a game that put you on the back foot. Then of course the sending-off makes it very very difficult.’
Everton need to flip the narrative on VAR
Whilst it’s hard not to feel hard done by after this latest VAR debacle and all the animosity between themselves and the Premier League last season, Everton seriously need to flip the script as soon as possible.
After all, the only people who can change things are them, and forging a victim mentality where fans always question why they are the ones being punished almost absolves the blame from poor individual performances and mistakes.

If things are going against them, they simply need to execute their game plan to such a level that it is indisputable.
Attack with purpose and defend resolutely, and pick up enough points to survive again.
Then, once in the Bramley-Moore Dock stadium, the Toffees can start to have ambitions
