The prospect of losing Jarrad Branthwaite to Liverpool is an eventuality that Everton fans simply cannot even begin to imagine.
After all, these clubs are sworn enemies, and seldom does a player make the trip directly across Stanley Park.
However, that is what certain outlets are arguing, suggesting that Liverpool want Branthwaite alongside Manchester United and are preparing to fight for his signature.
An unlikely claim, Everton manager Sean Dyche has now reacted to suggestions of his exit.
Sean Dyche reacts to Jarrad Branthwaite exit rumours
Chatting with reporters earlier today, just after Dyche provided an Everton fitness update ahead of Newcastle United, attention naturally turned back to Jarrad Branthwaite.
After all, itβs no coincidence that his return to the starting lineup coincided with the Toffeesβ first Premier League win of the season.
However, when asked about the 22-year-old and the clubβs supposed reliance on him, the Everton boss was quick to dismiss that notion even amidst rumours that Everton could sell Branthwaite.
Dyche noted: βWhether it is or it isnβt [too much pressure to rely on Branthwaite] people will make that story, thatβs just the way it goes. I think heβs rounded enough to know that.
βThereβs ten other players out there at any given time working hard and I thought they worked hard around him on Saturday.
βHeβs still getting back to true fitness. I know him well enough to know that heβs well aware of his teammates and what the importance of the group are.
βThereβs a lot going on for him outside of what we do and itβs nothing to do with him obviously, stories everywhere about him. He seems pretty level and pretty much just enjoying playing, or getting back to playing. Thatβs for sure.β
Dan Friedkin could make huge statement of intent at Everton
With Dan Friedkin closing in on his Everton takeover, if he wants to make a clear statement of intent with his new club, the answer is clear.
After all, Branthwaiteβs importance to the team, however much Dyche tries to play it down, is remarkable.
The suggestion is that this young superstar will not be signing a new contract, and instead will assess his options next summer.

However, if Friedkin can provide him the huge sum of money that Manchester United might offer, and sell him the long-term dream for progression, already he would have Evertonians on his side.
