Sean Dyche ‘surprised’ by what happened to 21-year-old Everton youngster this week

Everton boss Sean Dyche has admitted he was “surprised” with how one of his players was treated while on international duty this week.

The Toffees’ squad reconvened at Finch Farm after a two-week break ahead of Saturday’s clash against Bournemouth.

Everton are still in search of their first Premier League win of 2024 and are coming off a 2-0 loss to Manchester United.

Dyche will be assessing his squad, with several players returning who have featured for their countries over the past week.

However, there is one player who is set to return who will still be relatively fresh.

Jarrad Branthwaite was called up to the England squad for the first time but was confined to the bench for the fixtures against Brazil and Belgium.

Even an injury to John Stones couldn’t tempt Gareth Southgate into using the 21-year-old, with the England boss preferring Lewis Dunk, Ezri Konsa and Joe Gomes.

Dyche has since shared his thoughts on Branthwaite’s lack of minutes.

In his pre-match press conference, Dyche said: “I would say as Everton manager and someone who cares for the players, I was surprised he didn’t get even a few minutes.

“That being said it was a fantastic experience to be around the group. I know Gareth treats them well there. I am sure he would’ve enjoyed that experience. I had a quick word with him today, but nothing heavy; he’s back in the group training with us today.”

What else has been said about Branthwaite’s England snub?

Dunk’s performance against Belgium has probably done Branthwaite a favour. The Brighton man was a liability and he could have even played his way out of Southgate’s plans.

Why the England boss opted to use the 32-year-old instead of the Everton youngster is a mystery. Ian Wright also shares this View, and the Arsenal legend cannot fathom how the Cumbrian-born defender saw zero minutes of action.

“How did Jarrad Branthwaite get zero minutes across the two friendlies? Doesn’t make sense. Perfect opportunity to have a look at him,” he wrote on his personal X account.

All Branthwaite can do is continue his excellent form between now and the end of the season. After England’s recent outings, fresh ideas are certainly required in defence.
