‘Shame’: Journalist suggests Sean Dyche ran out of patience with ‘special’ Everton player, so he sold him

Ellis Simms could become a ‘special’ player following his departure from Everton.

That’s according to journalist Paul Brown, who has admitted it is a ‘shame’ that Sean Dyche didn’t have the patience to keep him at Goodison Park.

Despite joining Everton’s academy six years ago, Simms’ stint in the first team was very brief.

The striker enjoyed loan spells with Blackpool, Hearts and Sunderland and netted 22 goals across 57 appearances as he made a name for himself in the Championship and League One.

Simms was a fan favourite during his time on Wearside, however Everton unexpectedly recalled him from his loan in the new year due to their lack of attacking options.

The 22-year-old certainly wasn’t ready for Premier League football and scored only a memorable equaliser against Chelsea before he was sold to Coventry City in a deal rising to £8 million in the summer.

While Simms has only managed two goals so far this season, Brown has tipped the forward for a big future and has suggested the Toffees will regret offloading him.

“I do think that, one day, Ellis Simms is going to be a special player,” Brown told GIVEMESPORT.

“I think he’s got the potential to be much, much better than he is because he has got all the tools in his locker to improve greatly.

“It’s a shame, in a way, that Everton weren’t able to have the patience with him. But I don’t think he would have got many chances this season. I don’t really think that Sean Dyche was willing to be patient enough with him.

“I think they needed an upgrade in the position and they probably did the right thing. It’s just a shame because in two, three or four years’ time, I think Ellis Simms could still be a great player.”

Should Everton have kept Simms?

Ellis Simms’ talent was widely recognised in the Championship following his success at Sunderland, however he could have done with another year in the second tier before he was thrown in at the deep end with Everton.

The Toffees handled their academy graduate completely wrong and, as a result of that, he was sold as he was deemed not good enough.

Sean Dyche’s understandably needed the cash and they actually earned a unbelievable fee for him, but Brown is probably right in thinking that he could become a good player and could eventually return to the top flight.

In fact, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Everton were to end up swapping places with Simms in the Championship. But the Merseyside outfit can’t think like that and they can’t regret selling a player, because that’s just what football is.
