Alan Brazil believes Everton’s point deduction could end up being ‘catastrophic’ for the Premier League.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the pundit claimed that the £20 million Everton had overspent was ‘nothing’.

The Toffees were handed a huge ten-point deduction last week after they were found guilty of breaching financial fair play rules earlier this year.

The Merseyside outfit were found to have gone around £20 million over the maximum amount that Premier League clubs are allowed to spend over a three-year period.

Everton were referred to an independent regulator, who then confirmed they would be docked 10 points, leaving them 19th in the Premier League table.

Everton have since said they will appeal the decision, while many pundits and fans have been very critical of the punishment.

Meanwhile, Man City have been accused of a whopping 115 breaches between 2009 and 2018, and are still probably quite far away from finding out their potential punishment. However, there has been plenty of debate regarding the outcome, with many believing they should receive a much bigger point deduction than Everton – who had been found guilty of only a single breach.

Alan Brazil has now slammed the Premier League for their ‘not fair’ decision and has claimed it could have ‘catastrophic’ consequences on the top flight.

“I think we’ve got major problems coming,” Brazil told talkSPORT.

“Look at all these fingers pointed at City and Chelsea. Who missed out on Champions League last season – Liverpool? What if they say, hold on a minute, you’ve cost us £400/£500m because we’re not in the Champions League. We’re suing you. If Chelsea and City have broken the rules, why are we suffering? If they sue them, this could be catastrophic for the Premier League.

“I’m not anti-City or anti-Chelsea, but it’s just not fair what has happened to Everton. Everton have held their hands up and they’ve paid for this. But I think it will be reduced from 10, I think they might get five back on appeal. Then it’s going to cause chaos towards the end of the season.

“This was all over about £20m that they overspent, right? £20m is nothing now. It’s not as if they have broken this rule by spending over £200m, they haven’t. We haven’t heard the last of this, this is going to be a can of worms.”

What happens now?

The Premier League were looking to set a precedent with their huge ten-point deduction, but surely they are already regretting the decision.

There is no way that they were oblivious to the impact this could have on Man City’s case, so what were they intending on doing when that rolled around?

We all know Pep Guardiola’s side won’t receive a punishment reflected by Everton’s, so it seems more likely that the Toffees’ point-deduction will instead be reduced.

While that is good news for Sean Dyche, it doesn’t cover up the terrible business from the Premier League itself. Such a punishment would never be put upon any of the ‘Big Six’ clubs.
