Everton have had five World Cup winners throughout their 148-year history.

You would think there would have been more, particularly considering Everton’s golden era during the 1980s under Howard Kendall.

But, as it stands, the Toffees have only staged a handful of world champions, although they could have another one this summer.

Jordan Pickford has a decent chance of winning the competition with England, who are preparing to take on DR Congo in the round of 32 on Wednesday.

Anyhow, without further ado, here are the five World Cup winners who have plied their trade for the Merseysiders.

Ray Wilson – England

Ray Wilson is actually the only Everton player to win the World Cup whilst being an active player for the club.

Wilson, who spent five years of his career with the Toffees, won the tournament with the Three Lions in 1966.

Alan Ball – England

Alan Ball won the 1966 World Cup just before joining Everton from Blackpool in a transfer worth around £284,000, which was substantial at the time.

Ball went on to make 251 appearances on Merseyside, netting an impressive 78 goals under Harry Catterick.

Marco Materazzi – Italy

Marco Materazzi made 33 appearances for the club during the 1998-99 season before winning the tournament several years later with Italy in 2006.

Famously, Materazzi was headbutted by France star Zinedine Zidane in the final, who was subsequently given a straight red card.

Shkodran Mustafi – Germany

Many Toffees fans won’t remember Shkodran Mustafi ever playing for the club, but he did make one appearance back in December 2009.

Mustafi went on to have a solid career after departing Finch Farm, and he won the World Cup with Germany in 2014.

Djibril Sidibe – France

Djibril Sidibe, who spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Everton, became World Champion with France in 2018.

Sidibe only made one appearance at the tournament in Russia, starting in a goalless draw against Denmark in the group stages.
