Everton are looking to get out of their mini-rut against Aston Villa on Sunday.

It’s been a bad start to 2026 for the Toffees, with a 4-2 defeat against Brentford at the Hill Dickinson Stadium being followed by a draw with Wolves.

Then, last weekend, Everton crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Sunderland.

Things don’t get much easier for Everton, with a trip to Villa Park next for David Moyes and the players.

After a poor start, Villa have recovered magnificently and are currently flying high in third, just five points off leaders Arsenal.

So it’s a very tough test for Everton, but one they could do with passing so as not to lose ground.

Paul Merson reckons Villa will run out 3-0 winners against Everton, and pundit Chris Sutton has also now made his score prediction.

Everton are certainly the underdogs going into this game.

With Unai Emery’s side full of confidence, it will take a huge effort from Everton to get something – but pundit Chris Sutton doesn’t see it happening.

Writing for BBC Sport, the pundit predicting a 2-1 win for Villa, saying: “It must be such a wonderful time to be an Aston Villa fan – they have been on an incredible run and their one defeat in their past 15 games, at Arsenal at the end of the year, has not affected their confidence.

“Villa drew 0-0 at Everton at the start of the season, but their form has picked up a lot since then – they have stacks of belief, and they have lots of goals in them too.

“Everton will have Jack Grealish back from suspension to face his old club, which is a boost for them and him.

“David Moyes certainly won’t make it easy for Villa, but I’m still expecting them (Villa) to win.”

Grealish, of course, is a former player and will be keen to make an impact. He’ll be nice and fresh after playing no part against Sunderland.

Everton have travelled well recently

Everton have stuttered at the Hill Dickinson Stadium of late, so perhaps an away game will actually be welcomed by the players.

That said though, Villa Park is obviously a tough place to go.

But there is reason for optimism for Everton, who have kept a clean sheet in four of their last five Premier League away games.

Who are you picking to start against Villa if you were David Moyes? 🤨

Going into the game, Everton are actually looking to make it three away clean sheets on the spin for the first time since May 2021 (Carlo Ancelotti managed four in a row).

It will be vital for Everton to defend well and stay in the game.

Key players like Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins and Emi Buendia need keeping quiet, and Everton must take their chances when it comes. Certainly, there is potential for a smash-and-grab away result.
