Tony Bellew fumes at ‘disgusting’ Premier League decision against Everton

Everton fans have rightly been left furious with this latest decision concerning Nottingham Forest.

After all, despite on the surface having committed a crime more serious than theirs, the powers that be concluded that a four-point deduction was appropriate; two less than the Toffees’ eventual sanction.

It’s ludicrous how unconvincing, uneducated and subjective the decision-making has been throughout this PSR saga, which has seen English football irreparably altered for the worse.

And now, Tony Bellew has been speaking with his usual passion and fury in defence of his club.

What Tony Bellew said about Everton and the Premier League

Speaking live on talkSPORT earlier this morning (19/03, 8 am), the former WBC cruiserweight champion of the world was left furious with the Premier League’s conduct throughout this process.

Siting various other clubs, he noted: ‘It’s typical, let’s just nail the scousers. It’s an absolute disgrace. It’s going to end up like FIFA, the path they went down, corruption and all that kind of stuff. It’s an absolute disgrace.

‘You’ve got a team in Manchester City who’s had more charges than I could possibly think of and there’s no charges come to them. It’s an absolute disgrace.

‘And Forest, I’ve got no bother with Forest, I think Forest are a big club, they’re a good club, yet they’ve done far worse than us but get less of a points deduction. I mean it just doesn’t make any sense, the Premier League are not doing anything right and they’re destroying football.

‘These could take another points deduction from us. Where’s the justice in that?

‘I don’t mean to be patronising but you can’t have 115 charges. They done us for ten points… I mean, you could go into administration, that means you’ve failed on every single level, you only get nine points. They took ten from us. Ten! Which is just insane, its a disgrace, its disgusting.’

Why did Everton’s points deduction get reduced?

What’s so ridiculous about this whole situation, particularly involving Everton and Forest, is that the former were first handed a ten-point deduction. That was the starting point from which they had to defend themselves, and in the end, six marked the lesser of two evils.

The Tricky Trees, however, only have four points as a starting point, which could even be reduced on appeal.

The Toffees were vociferous in their immediate defence of their ruling, which marked the largest deduction in English top-flight history.

And in achieving some success, their statement echoed some of the reasons behind why they managed to recoup four points.

They wrote: ‘We understand the appeal board considered the 10-point deduction originally imposed to be inappropriate when assessed against the available benchmarks of which the club made the commission aware, including the position under the relevant EFL regulations, and the nine-point deduction that is imposed under the Premier League’s own rules in the event of insolvency.

‘The club is also particularly pleased with the appeal board’s decision to overturn the original commission’s finding that the club failed to act in utmost good faith.

‘That decision, along with reducing the points deduction, was an incredibly important point of principle for the club on appeal. The club, therefore, feels vindicated in pursuing its appeal.’
