Everton midfielder Andre Gomes is inching closer to a return to first team action.

Andre Gomes is yet to make it onto the pitch this season, as the Portuguese ace is still struggling with a calf injury.

Gomes’ career has been ravaged by injuries and fitness issues fairly consistently since his £22 million arrival at Goodison Park from Barcelona in the summer of 2019.

The 30-year-old is undoubtedly talented. Technically gifted and an excellent passer of the ball, Gomes has shown flashes of his quality across his time with the Merseyside club. Alongside his injury issues, though, consistency has been a concern.

That being said, Sean Dyche will still be keen to have Gomes at his disposal as soon as possible. The manager is yet to work extensively with the 29-cap former Portugal international himself, as Gomes spent last season on loan with Lille.

The loan move looked to have done Gomes some good, as he was able to play regular football for the Ligue 1 outfit. The £112,212-a-week playmaker racked up 27 appearances for the French side.

Gomes may not have much of a long-term future at Everton. However, if he can get fit and find some form, he certainly has the capacity to have a positive impact this season.

Gomes on the mend

The question that remains now is how far Gomes currently is from being match-ready. According to injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar, speaking to Goodison News, the former Barcelona man is being nursed back to fitness with a great deal of caution.

Dr Brar said, “he’s been dealing with calf problems all season and these can be extremely sensitive, notorious and prone to re-injury.”

“These are quite touch and go so it’s anyone’s guess when he may be back and it could be in the coming days.”

“He’s expected to be assessed during the international break so it’s best to wait for the club to confirm the news.”

It will be a significant boost for Dyche if Gomes can be considered available for selection soon after the international break. The Toffees have some tough fixtures on the horizon, with Premier League encounters with Liverpool, West Ham United, Brighton, Crystal Palace, and Manchester United to come. Having a full complement of players to choose from will be a major plus in this period.
