It was an uneventful afternoon at Goodison Park as Everton drew 1-1 with Arsenal.

Iliman Ndiaye’s penalty was the difference in Everton getting their fourth draw in five games, and safety in the Premier League looks all but secured.

Ndiaye was impressed with David Moyes’ instructions, which helped the Toffees gain a point against tough opposition.

There wasn’t much to be talked about apart from Everton being awarded the penalty, which lead to the draw, as Mike Dean thought Everton’s penalty was ‘soft’.

But there was also another incident that went under the radar, as the PGMOL might have made an error.

What happened with VAR rule during Everton vs Arsenal

After the Merseyside Derby, the officials were walking a tightrope with Everton.

James Tarkowski not being sent off certainly made the headlines, as Tarkowski hasn’t been red-carded in the Premier League.

To make matters worse for them, Tarkowski received another booking without a dismissal vs Arsenal, but an incident involving Jake O’Brien raised eyebrows from fans.

O’Brien clashed with Ben White on the 16th minute, which resulted in a yellow card for O’Brien after a VAR check.

But VAR checks aren’t allowed to give out yellow cards, which made for a strange decision, however, Patrick Boyland managed to explain why this seemed out of place in the rulebook.

Boyland revealed that the linesman advised a yellow card before the check had taken place, meaning that the VAR stuck with a yellow, in agreement that it wasn’t a red.

VAR rule controversy backs up Joe Hart claim involving Everton

It’s not been a flattering few weeks for VAR and the PGMOL, who have made some howlers.

Everton just so happen to be involved, as although this was the correct call, the reaction to the decision shows a change is needed.

The rules in the Premier League around everything don’t seem to be explained effectively, as Joe Hart said there’s problems with the rules.

This came after there was plenty of heated debate surrounding whether Luis Diaz was offside in the build-up to Liverpool’s winner on Wednesday.

O’Brien’s yellow has been explained, but it’s left fans confused about what VAR can and can’t do.
