What Everton tried to do with Tyler Dibling at Finch Farm before £40m man refused

Everton are quite rightly placing the spotlight on Tyler Dibling this summer.

The Toffees need to find a way to spark the England U21 international into life after his quiet debut campaign at the Hill Dickinson Stadium – where he failed to provide a goal or assist in 18 appearances following a £40m move from Southampton.

In fairness, the 20-year-old was only given four starts in the Premier League by David Moyes.

We have previously opined that Dibling could be better served playing centrally, and the Daily Mail now state that the Toffees tried exactly that in training at Finch Farm.

However, the Everton No.20 was unreceptive to the idea.

How can Tyler Dibling actually turn things around at Everton? 🤷‍♂️

It's going to need some turnaround from the youngster 😫

Everton attempted to use Tyler Dibling as a central striker

The Daily Mail believe Everton tried to turn Dibling into a centre-forward ahead of a summer where Moyes wants a new striker signed to compete with Thierno Barry and Beto.

However, the Southampton academy graduate ‘prefers to take his chances’ on the wing.

It is a somewhat worrying development, which suggests Everton do not believe Dibling is capable of playing on the wing under Moyes to the required standard.

Having said that, we cannot see how the Exeter-born forward would be any worse than Dwight McNeil out on the right flank, considering the former Burnley man only managed to muster up one assist in his 22 Premier League appearances last season, 14 of which came as starts.

That is ten more starts than Dibling was afforded.

Ultimately, the main question is this: why did Everton spend £40m on a youngster they seemingly have no idea how to use?

Moyes really needs to find a way to coax the best out of Dibling next term, as another quiet campaign for one of the most expensive signings in Everton’s history would surely see his value plummet.
